What is the Emoji Game?
The Emoji Game is a word puzzle built around emoji rebuses. You are shown three familiar phrases with some of their letters missing, plus a tray of six emoji groups. Each group stands for a run of letters — sometimes the literal word the emoji shows, sometimes an idea it evokes, and sometimes just how its name sounds — and your job is to place every group into the exact blanks it fills.
A group can fill letters that are not next to each other, and the three interpretation styles — literal, associative, and phonetic — are what make the puzzle click. A pear can supply the letters in a word about pears, three fish can spell a school, and a ghost can hide the boo inside a yearbook. Solve all three phrases and the puzzle is done.
How scoring works
Your score is simply the number of moves you used. Every placement — right or wrong — counts as a move, and expanding a clue costs a move too. A flawless solve uses six moves, one correct drop per group:
- 🤩 6 moves — Perfection
- 😍 7 moves — Love It
- 😎 8 moves — Very Cool
- 😊 9 moves — Great Job
- 🙂 10+ moves — Nicely Done
How to play in four steps
- Read the phrases. Three phrases sit above the tray, each missing some letters and paired with a short clue. Revealed letters are your scaffolding — sound the phrase out in your head.
- Decode the emoji. Each of the six emoji groups stands for letters: the thing it shows, an idea it evokes, or the sound of its name. Match a group to the blanks whose length and letters fit.
- Place a group. Drag a group onto a blank span, or tap the group then tap the blanks. Right fills the letters in; wrong bounces back. Either way it costs one move.
- Solve in few moves. Finish all three phrases using as few moves as you can. Six is perfect. Reveal the answers only if you are truly stuck — it ends your streak.
That is the whole game: quick to learn, satisfying to master. For deeper tactics, read the strategy guide.

Frequently asked questions
What is the Emoji Game?
The Emoji Game is a daily word puzzle. You are given three familiar phrases with some letters missing, and a tray of six emoji groups. Each emoji group stands for a chunk of letters — sometimes the literal word it shows, sometimes a related idea, sometimes just how it sounds — and you drag each group into the blanks it fills until all three phrases are complete.
How do you play the Emoji Game?
Read the three phrases and their clues, then work out which emoji group fills each blank. Drag a group onto a blank span, or tap the group and then tap the blank. A correct placement writes its letters in and removes the group from the tray; a wrong placement bounces back. Every placement — right or wrong — costs one move, and expanding a clue costs a move too, so aim to solve in as few moves as possible.
How is the Emoji Game scored?
Your score is the number of moves you used. Six moves is a flawless solve (one correct drop per group) and earns Perfection. Seven is Love It, eight is Very Cool, nine is Great Job, and ten or more is Nicely Done. Fewer moves is always better, so think before you drag.
Is the Emoji Game free to play?
Yes. Every puzzle here is completely free, with no app to install and no account required. Play the daily puzzle, an unlimited stream of fresh puzzles, and a full archive in your browser on phone, tablet, or desktop — and if you want to appear on the daily leaderboard, you can optionally sign in.
Is this the Apple News+ Emoji Game?
No. This is an independent, free web version of the same emoji-rebus idea. Apple's Emoji Game is part of Apple News+ and needs a subscription and an Apple device. This site is a fan-made companion that runs in any browser, anywhere, at no cost, and is not affiliated with Apple.
Does my progress save?
Yes. Your progress on the daily puzzle, your solving streak, and your best move counts are saved locally in your browser, so clearing your browser data resets them. If you sign in, your streak and stats also sync to your account so they follow you across devices.
What happens if I reveal the answers?
You can reveal the full solution at any time, but doing so ends the puzzle and breaks your daily streak — just like the official game. Revealing is there for when you are truly stuck and just want to see how it worked.
